- Inherited from Proto-Slavic *bъrkàti[1] with a semantic shift of to drive, to swing oneself > to exert oneself > to wrestle, remodeled to have a conjugation type III2D (from -ac/-ôwac) due to the stress and contamination from Proto-Slavic *bъrkovati.
- From Proto-Slavic *barati + Proto-Slavic *-kati.[2]
