From Middle English bargaynen, from Anglo-Norman bargaigner (to bargain), from Frankish *borganjan (to borrow, lend), from Proto-Germanic *burgijaną (to borrow, lend), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰergʰ- (to protect, secure). By surface analysis, bargen +‎ -io.
