From Old Galician-Portuguese barvacãa (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Old French barbacane, of uncertain origin: compare English barbican, Arabic بَرْبَخ (barbaḵ, aqueduct, sewer), and Persian باب‌خانه (bâb-xâne, gatehouse). Cognate with Portuguese barbacã.
