[edit]From Middle High German welisc, from Old High German walask, from Proto-West Germanic *walhisk, from Proto-Germanic *walhiskaz (“foreign, non-Germanic (i.e. Celtic, Roman)”). Cognate with German welsch (“pertaining to the Romance-speaking areas and population of Switzerland”), English Welsh (“pertaining to Wales”).
