[edit]Borrowed from Turkish başkan, from Old Turkic 𐰉𐱁𐰴𐰣 (bašɣan, “leader”), which was derived from Proto-Turkic *baĺč (head) with the suffix *-gan. Morphologically baş + -an.[1]
