[edit]From Arabic أَبْزار (ʔabzār, “spice”). The specific sense “pepper” also in Moroccan Arabic بزار (bzār). Compare further the unrelated but similar-sounding Arabic بَهار (bahār, “spice”), whence North Levantine Arabic بهار (bhār, “pepper”).
