From Proto-Semitic *bVʕVr- (bull, calf). Compare with Arabic بَعِير (baʕīr, camel) and Biblical Hebrew בְּעִיר (bəʕír, cattle, beasts) and Ugaritic 𐎛𐎁𐎗 (ỉbr, bull).
