[edit]Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀩𑀽𑀝 (*būṭa, “bush, plant”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-). Cognate with Hindi बूटा (būṭā, “bush”), Romani buro (“thornbush”). Dardic cognates are lacking. Compare Classical Persian بوتَه (bōta, “bush”).
