Etymology

Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀩𑀽𑀝 (*būṭa, bush, plant) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-). Cognate with Hindi बूटा (būṭā, bush), Romani buro (thornbush). Dardic cognates are lacking. Compare Classical Persian بوتَه (bōta, bush).
