Etymology

[edit]

Likely from reinterpreting the initial a- as being the prefix a-, which triggers gemination. Compare English advance, Middle French advancer.

Verb

[edit]

avvanzàre (first-person singular present avvànzo, first-person singular past historic avvanzài, past participle avvanzàto, auxiliary èssere)

  1. (obsolete) Alternative form of avanzare
    • 1719, Carlo Ambrogio Cattaneo, “Esercizio della buona Morte”, in Opere, page 132:
O quante vesti, e tappezzerie, e tele soprafine! donatevene via una quarta parte, e tanto ve ne avvanza abbondantemente per uso domestico.
Look how many clothes, tapestries and fine cloths! give away a fourth part, and you'll still have plenty to spare for domestic use.
