Usage notes

• avoir peur que takes the subjunctive and, in formal language, the meaningless "expletive" ne which does not negate the verb.

  J’ai peur qu’il (ne) fasse une erreur ― I am afraid he will make a mistake.

• très (“very”) may intervene between the verb and peur, despite the fact that peur is a noun. This was once proscribed but is now accepted.
