[edit]Somehow connected to Old Norse igða (“small bird”), either from Proto-Germanic *ewwadjǭ or from a common North Germanic/Scandinavian substrate. Compare Old Norse æðr (“elderduck”) and Proto-Samic *(h)āvtë.
