Etymology

[edit]

From aus- +‎ statten (to stand up). The core verb statten, now outdated in modern German, is from Middle High German staten (to help do something; to add).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “The word staten looks very much like a denominal verb from Proto-Germanic *stadiz (place, location), from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂tis (standing, position).”
