From Proto-Celtic *owi-garyos, from *owis (“sheep”) +‎ *gar- (“to call”) +‎ *-yos (agent noun suffix), literally “sheep-caller”. The evolution of the first vowel of this word is irregular; the expected outcome of this compound would be **uígire.
