Etymology

Inherited from Vulgar Latin *eccum tantum, from Latin eccum + tantum. (The initial syllable of *eccum- compounds regularly turns to /a-/ in Romanian.) Closely parallel to Italian cotanto and Old Catalan aitant. Compare also Old French itant, Old Spanish atanto (as well as French tant, Italian tanto, Spanish tanto).
