[edit]Etymology
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]asunto
- home, residence; unit, housing unit, dwelling unit; dwelling, domicile, habitation (any place for living, especially one constructed for that purpose)
- (in particular) flat, apartment (complete domicile occupying only part of a building)
- Synonyms: asuinhuoneisto (formal), huoneisto (shorter form of the previous term), (colloquial) kämppä, luukku, boksi
- Hyponym: kerrostaloasunto
Usage notes
[edit]- The most common English translation for asunto in a general context is simply "home", although note that "home" in any sentimental sense, or in the sense of the place where someone lives, is koti, not asunto. In official use, the term unit (housing unit, dwelling unit) or dwelling may be used. residence may also be used, but it carries a somewhat formal tone.
- However, translating 250 asuntoa as "250 dwellings" may imply 250 separate buildings, while the Finnish phrase makes no such implication.
- Other possible terms include domicile, habitation and abode, but these are chiefly formal or poetic.
