Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Seemingly a derivation with the suffix -re, but the root is unknown, nor does the word have any known cognates. The word probably originally referred to household tasks as traditionally carried out by women, as such uses are prevalent in traditional dialects.[1]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈɑskɑreˣ/, [ˈɑ̝s̠kɑ̝re̞(ʔ)]
  • Rhymes: -ɑskɑre
  • Hyphenation(key): as‧ka‧re

    • 1870, Aleksis Kivi, Seitsemän veljestä: Kahdestoista luku (Translation 1991 by Richard A. Impola)
Ja loppui työ ja raataminen ulkona, jossa kaikki jo lepäsi kinosten alla, mutta pirtissä jo alkoi askare toinen, askare aapiskirjan kanssa tuolla pöydän ääressä.
Work and toll outdoors were over, and everything was already resting under the snow, but a new labor began in the cabin: toil at the table with the ABC book.
