[edit]From Latin arte (“by skill”), (ablative of ars (“art”)) + factum (“thing made”), from facio (“to make, do"”). Equivalent to a possible Proto-Romance or Vulgar Latin *artefactum (compare Portuguese artefato, Spanish artefacto); see also artifex (“artist”).
