Etymology

[edit]

From ardh +‎ -je. Compare Hittite 𒄩𒅈𒁺 (ḫardu-, offspring, descendant), Old Church Slavonic родити (roditi, give birth, originate) from Proto-Slavic *roditi, and perhaps Old Armenian որդի (ordi, child, offspring). Possibly from the same root of hardhi, with a sense development similar to Proto-Germanic *stamniz meaning both ‘stem, tree stalk’ and ‘tribe, lineage’.
