Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese arco das velhas, possibly a shortening of arco da lei velha (arc of the old law), a reference to the Old Testament and Genesis 9:12-17.[1] Compare Galician arco da vella, Mirandese arco de la bielha, Leonese and Asturian arcu la vieya.
