Etymology
[edit]Starostin suggests Proto-Inuit *atqa-nǝʁ, from Proto-Eskimo *atʁa-. Fortescue suggests, via aqqaneq (“eleven, numeral base”), from aqqarpoq (“descends”) itself derived from Proto-Eskimo *at(ə)- (“down”), i.e. "that which is provided when one has descended" (when one reaches the toe having reached ten using the fingers).
