[edit]Borrowed from New Latin apophysis, from Ancient Greek ἀπόφυσις (apóphusis, “offshoot”), from ἀπό (apó, “off, from”) + φύσις (phúsis, “origin, birth”), from φύω (phúō, “to bring forth, to cause to grow”).
