From Dutch antagonist, from Latin antagonista, from Ancient Greek ἀνταγωνιστής (antagōnistḗs, opponent) (ἀντί (antí, against) + ἀγωνιστής (agōnistḗs, a combatant, pleader, actor)), from ἀνταγωνίζομαι (antagōnízomai, antagonize).
