From Middle High German anegrīfen (to grab, seize upon, violate, assault, attack), from Old High German anagrīfan (to touch, grab, seize, attack), from Proto-West Germanic *anagrīpan (to seize, attack), equivalent to an- +‎ greifen. Cognate with German Low German angriepen, Dutch aangrijpen, Old English ongripe (an attack, assault).
