[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *andawurdī, from Proto-Germanic *andawurdiją, equivalent to and- + -wyrde. Cognate with Old Saxon andwurdi (“answer”), Dutch antwoord (“answer”) German Antwort (“answer”), and Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌳𐌹 (andawaurdi, “answer”).
