[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *andawliti, from Proto-Germanic *andawlitiz, equivalent to and- (“facing”) + *wlite (“countenance”). Cognate with Old Norse andlit (Swedish anlete, Norwegian Nynorsk andlet) and Old High German antlizzi (German Antlitz).
