[edit]From ander + half. Ander, while usually meaning other, also has an archaic meaning as “second”. Half means more specifically “half before”. Therefore, anderhalf means literally “half before the second”, but this meaning is no longer generally understood in this way. Compare German anderthalb, Yiddish אָנדערטהאַלבן (onderthalbn).
