- An Arab tourist on a bus operating the line between Baku and Qazax was engaged in immoral activity with an Azerbaijani woman. These actions of his were met with outrage by those on the bus. A passenger named Mahmud warned the Arab tourist: “Behave, people have mothers and sisters”. He beat up the tourist who ignored the warning.
Usage notes
[edit]- ^ That is, any conversational topic involving the mother or a sister of the interlocutor that could potentially be perceived as offensive; an unintentional or intentional offensive reference to or remark about one's mother of sister. In a broader sense, anything that regards the perceived honour of one's female relatives, that needs to be defended or safeguarded.
- ^ The phrase camaatın ana-bacısı var, 'people have mothers and sisters', is often used to express disapproval of behavior that is perceived as non-compliant with societal norms, such as dress code, and thus morally or ethically undesired as threatening the honor of someone's female relatives (and by association, that of oneself).
