From Proto-Eastern Algonquian *məhxōr, from Proto-Algonquian *mehθweθ-. Cognate with Unami mùxul (boat, canoe), Mahican amaxoon (boat), Abenaki amasol (canoe), Penobscot ámasol (canoe), Massachusett mishoòn (boat, canoe), Narragansett mishoon (boat, canoe), Loup A amisȣl (boat, canoe), Mohegan-Pequot mushoy (boat, canoe).[1][2]
