Usage notes
[edit]- Formerly, until 1990's, the vocational schools were both officially and in common usage called ammattikoulu in Finnish. After the educational system was renewed, a whole lot of new terminology was introduced, presumably to underline the change. The terms toisen asteen ammatillinen oppilaitos, ammatillinen oppilaitos, ammattioppilaitos and ammattiopisto mean roughly the same thing, but they are all still commonly called ammattikoulu or more simply, amis.
- Should not be confused with ammattikorkeakoulu, which provides tertiary education, not secondary education.
