French
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old French ameillorer, from a prefixed version of Late Latin meliōrāre, a verb based on Latin meliārī (“better”). The modern French form was modified under Latin influence, hence the otherwise-unexpected /lj/ (instead of /j/ < /ʎ/).
