Inherited from Vulgar Latin *amendoi, from ambī duī, from Latin ambō (both) + duī, from duo (two). Compare Aromanian amindoilji, andoilji. Cf. also Old Italian amendue, Engadine amenduos, Old French andui, Occitan amdui.
