[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese aljofre, from Arabic الجَوْهَر (al-jawhar, “jewel, pearl”), from Persian گوهر (gowhar, “jewel, pearl”). Cognate with Portuguese aljôfar and Spanish aljófar.[1]
