[edit]Borrowed from Spanish alfil, from Arabic الْفِيل (al-fīl, “elephant”), from Middle Persian pyl (/pīl/), from Akkadian 𒄠𒋛 (/pīru/), orthographic borrowing of Sumerian 𒄠𒋛 (am-si /amsi/).
