[edit]From almendra (“almond”), or from Vulgar Latin *amendlus < *amandulus, from Latin amygdalus, from Ancient Greek ἀμύγδαλος (amúgdalos), ἀμυγδάλη (amugdálē). Compare Italian mandorlo.
