Borrowed from Spanish algarroba, from Andalusian Arabic الخَرُّوبَة (al-ḵarrūba), from Arabic خَرُّوب (ḵarrūb, “carob”).

1. The carob, a leguminous tree of the Mediterranean region.
2. The edible beans or pods of the carob; St. John's bread.
3. The honey mesquite (Prosopis juliflora), a small tree found from California to Buenos Aires.
4. The sweet, pulpy pods of the honey mesquite.
