[edit]albus (“white”) + -ūcus, a suffix common to several other Latin phytonyms, and a semantic connection found in other languages for the same plant, e.g. Arabic بَرْوَق (barwaq) from Aramaic ברוק (bārōq, “shiny-yellowish”).
