[edit]The most convincing explanation derives this word from Proto-Indo-European *h₁edʰ-, *h₁odʰ- (“pointed, sharp”), as with eglė (“spruce, fir”) < *ed-li,[1] see for more. Compare Latvian adît (“to darn”).
