1. Reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus.
   • 1954, Annals of internal medicine, volume 41, page 561:

     Further, in cases of hiatus hernia acid reflux was found both with and without esophagitis.

2. Heartburn, especially recurring or chronic heartburn.
   • 1965, Clinical surgery, volume 5, page 374:

     Heartburn and acid reflux are the next commonest symptoms.
