Etymology

From Middle High German abescheiden, from Old High German abaskeidan, from Proto-West Germanic *abaskaiþan, from Proto-Germanic *abaskaiþaną. Equivalent to ab- +‎ scheiden. Cognates include Dutch afscheiden, Old English ofscēadan and Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐍃𐌺𐌰𐌹𐌳𐌰𐌽 (afskaidan).
