From Proto-Semitic *ʔaṯar- (“footstep, trace”). Cognate with Arabic أَثَر (ʔaṯar, “trace, sign”) and Biblical Hebrew אֲשֶׁר (ʔăšɛ́r, a relativizer), אֲתָר (ʔăṯɔ́r, “site, location”).
