[edit]From Arabic اَلسُّوق (as-sūq, “the market, the souq”), from Aramaic שוקא or ܫܘܩܐ (šūqā’, “street, market”), from Akkadian 𒋻 (sūqu, “street”), from 𒊓𒀀𒆪 (sāqu, “narrow”). Cognate with Galician azougue, Spanish zoco and Maltese suq.
