[edit]First attested as sotrewold in 1205. Compound of the hydronym Zoete and Middle Dutch wout (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The compound element Rijn (“the Rhine”) and dijk (“levee”) was added later in order to distinguish the settlement from Zoeterwoude-Dorp. Compare Zoetermeer and Zwieten.
