Etymology

First attested as zeldrecht in 1363. Compound of an unclear first element and Middle Dutch drecht (ferry, watercourse). The first element has been interpreted as Middle Dutch zeel (rope, cable, line) or a derivation from Proto-Germanic *salah (willow, Salix sp.).
