Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German zīl(e), from Old High German zīla. Outside of High German only attested in eastern Dutch tijl and Westphalian Low German Tile (both “row of sheaves”), but probably inherited from Proto-Germanic, from Proto-Indo-European *deh₂y- (to devide). Related with Zeit and English time.
