Etymology

Backformation from Zeeuws (Zealandic) by analogy with pairs of the sort of Italiaans (Italian, adjective), Italiaan (Italian, noun). Zeeuws is equivalent to zee (sea) + -s (-ish) with retention of the -w- in Proto-Germanic *saiwiz (sea).
