[edit]Contracted from older Zeeër, from Middle High German zeiger, from Old High German zeigāri. Derived from the obsolete verb zeeën, zeegen (“to show”), for which compare iwwerzeegen. Cognate with German Zeiger, whence the variant below (possibly merged with dialectal Luxembourgish Zeier).
