Learned borrowing from Biblical Hebrew יֵשׁוּעַ (Yēšū́a, Jesus” or “Joshua). Cognate directly equivalent to Jesus via Latin Iēsus and Ancient Greek Ἰησοῦς (Iēsoûs) from nearly identical Aramaic יֵשׁוּע (Yēšū́ʿ). Cognate to Joshua from related variant Hebrew form יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Yĕhōšúa, Joshua).
