[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as ide in 1206. Etymology uncertain. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from West Frisian Ide (a personal name) and Proto-Germanic *îwiþja (“yew forest”). An alternative theory proposes that the toponym is pre-Germanic.
