[edit]From an East Slavic descendant of Proto-Slavic *vьlkъ (“wolf”). Alternatively, from Polish wołek (“small ox”), Lower Sorbian wołk (“small ox”), or a cognate in another Slavic language, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *volъ.
Suffix: From Polish -owicz or the Polish rendering of a cognate from another Slavic language, e.g. Belarusian -віч (-vič).
