[edit]- (Groningen) First attested as uinchem and uuinkhem in the 10th or 11th century. Etymology uncertain. The toponym may be a compound of a personal name, Old Frisian *wink (“corner”) or an otherwise unattested toponym *Winiki and heem (“home, settlement”).
- (Friesland) First attested as winshyum in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Winsum, potentially derived from a compound of Old Frisian Wynka (a personal name) and hēm (“home, settlement”).
